Region’s logistics offering taken to world stageJune 12, 2013
A team from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has visited the world’s biggest trade show for logistics, mobility, IT and supply chain management to put its re-launched cargo offering to the market.
Representatives at Air Cargo Europe included members of the airports Aviation Development team there to promote its services.
Chris Harcombe, Head of Aviation Development for Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We were delighted to attend this year’s Air Cargo Europe event with Gary Winterman from Anglo World Cargo one of our cargo delivery partners.
“Our attendance came on the back of news that Doncaster Sheffield Airport recorded a three hundred percent increase in its cargo figures for the year March 2012 – March 2013.
“Cargo is seen as a catalyst for developing the region’s logistics presence and we saw this event as a way of putting Doncaster and the Sheffield City Region firmly on the map as a can do location and centre of excellence for logistics
“Our clear objective was to get a foothold in the ad hoc market and let brokers know that we are open for business.
“Strategically we were also there to develop relationships with the scheduled market. Our aim here is longer term and we had a number of meetings with leading scheduled cargo airlines to start to understand their longer term position in the UK.
“This is an exciting time for logistics in the region and the launch of the LEP sector group at the airport on June 18 will further enhance this.”
The event attracted a record 53,000 trade visitors. A further rise in international scope was also noticeable at this year´s show – around 45 percent of the exhibitors came from outside Germany, and almost 40 percent of the visitors.
Gary Winterman, Managing Director of Anglo World Cargo, said: “Doncaster has a superb cargo offering and we were extremely proud to be able to take it to this global gathering.
“Our partnership is working and we’ve already seen one billion pounds worth of goods pass through Doncaster Sheffield airport in the last twelve months alone.
“This was a great opportunity for us to put a real focus on the potential for cargo business coming through Doncaster Sheffield Airport.”
The airport’s Cargo Terminal consists of 50.000 sq. ft. of operational space and is equipped with the latest cargo handling equipment. This, coupled with the airport’s 2893m runway, means that Anglo World Cargo have the ability to handle all aspects of airfreight from the smallest parcel to bespoke charters of the largest cargo aircraft, up to and including Antonov-225’s.
Future developments such as the Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS), a direct link road to the motorway network means that soon the airport will be even more accessible.
“The FARRRS project will add further weight to the proposition and will create a fantastic multimodal facility with road, rail, air and sea coming together.
“We’ve always seen Air Freight as a major part of the airports strategy and are delighted by how well our offer is being received,” added Chris.
