Record numbers of passengers used Doncaster Sheffield Airport in July, its busiest month ever and the airport has also seen a new partnership between Flybe and airberlin which enables its passengers to reach worldwide destinations from the airport.
Passenger numbers for July increased by 42% from the previous year to 141,155, with the airport on track to deliver over 1.3m passengers for the year.
At the same time Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline, and airberlin, Europe’s ninth largest airline have agreed a significant partnership which will give Flybe passengers access to airberlin’s network of around 150 worldwide destinations through Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s Berlin and Dusseldorf Flybe routes.
The new airberlin relationship will make some major destinations accessible from the Sheffield City Region via Berlin and onward to Munich, Zurich, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Vienna plus another route to New York alongside travelling via Dublin. Passengers can also take advantage of flying out via Berlin and back into Dusseldorf making more connections possible such as Abu Dhabi.
Steve Gill, chief executive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We are delighted to be once again sharing such positive news from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
“This enhanced connectivity further strengthens our message that we should be the first choice for people and business in the Sheffield City Region.
“With the investments made in the ease and convenience of using the airport such as the new motorway link road, terminal investments and expanded connectivity through our Flybe hub routes to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Dusseldorf means we are able to serve more routes locally that we know the region wants to use.”
Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s Chief Customer Officer commented: "Our new codeshare agreement with airberlin expands the reach of both airlines. It strengthens Flybe's 'One Stop to the World' proposition for our customers in Yorkshire who will benefit from connections to airberlin’s long-haul routes at Dusseldorf and Berlin-Tegel to and from Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s routes.
Bookings can be made through the airberlin website www.airberlin.com and are on sale now with frequent flyers able to take advantage of airberlin being part of the Oneworld Alliance. The relationship is a full codeshare with both partners working together to offer an attractive product to customers which includes the convenience of a single ticket and luggage being seamlessly transferred between aircraft.
“This is a great example of Flybe's commitment to providing convenient connections for business and leisure travellers from regional markets. With Dusseldorf starting in October, through its excellent high speed rail links, Hamburg and Cologne are now also easily accessible after a short flight” added Steve.
