Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is backing one of its own, by sponsoring Team GB triathlete James Lapish.
James, from Newark, is set to compete in the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Edmonton, Canada, which takes place from today to September 1.
The 43-year-old triathlete works as an air traffic controller at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which has sponsored him ahead of the Grand Final where he will go head-to-head with triathletes from around the world in the Age Group sprint discipline.
The sponsorship will go towards the cost of the race and training kit as James prepares to take part in the event which consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run.
James, who has worked at Doncaster Sheffield Airport for three-and-a-half years, said: “I’m extremely thankful to the Airport for their generous sponsorship donation.
“It is a dream come true to represent Team GB and the support of the airport has been first class.
“Training has been going well, and my aim is to just finish as quickly as possible. I can’t wait to get started.”
Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We are extremely proud to sponsor James.
“Qualifying for the event and being selected to represent Team GB is a fantastic achievement. We wish him the very best of luck for the Grand Final in Canada and wish him every success in the future.”
The age group system allows athletes to compete for medals in the same venue as the world’s elite athletes. As well as crowning the ITU World Champion, the world championship titles for Elite, U23, Juniors, Paratriathletes and Age Groupers are awarded.
